“Kilometer Kids” Participate in Swift-Cantrell Classic 5K
This year’s Swift-Cantrell Classic 5K, held on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 am in downtown Kennesaw, will include a group of area youth running together as members of the Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids. Their participation in the race is the culmination of an 11 week program designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in kids ages 5-13 through running-based activities.
Kilometer Kids was launched by the Atlanta Track Club in 2007 and today, impacts more than 5,000 kids at various venues throughout the Atlanta region. Kennesaw’s program is conducted by the Parks & Recreation Department. Children meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Swift-Cantrell Park for 18 sessions (11 weeks) and enjoy time outside playing games, doing drills, and running on the track. The program also offers incentive items to participants that reach their mileage goals and an online tool to track progress.
“We hope kids learn that health and fitness can be easy and rewarding and that getting outdoors is a whole lot more fun than sitting around in front of the TV or computer,” said City Councilmember Cris Welsh who is the program’s facilitator. “Our Kennesaw kids are also working toward earning a grant from the Track Club by serving as volunteers at this year’s Atlanta Marathon.”
